A special holiday in a unique location
Breakfast by the pool
A typical El Refugio day
After a leisurely reveille following a late night meal in one of La Herradura’s many beach restaurants, a quick dip in the pool is followed by breakfast of fresh fruit, orange juice, toast/croissants and coffee taken beside El Refugio’s large swimming pool.
Lunch on the top terrace
Mornings can be taken up with shopping in the village or Almunecar for groceries etc; or sunbathing with a good book by the pool or for the energetic golf, tennis, scuba diving/snorkeling, wind surfing; or a trek into the hills behind the property.
The barbecue area on the top terrace
A late lunch taken on the top terrace with unrestricted views of both sea and mountains washed down by a chilled glass of Rioja Rosado, makes a mandatory ‘siesta’ no hardship at all, particularly as El Refugio’s cool rooms provide a welcome respite from the hot afternoons.
View of the Cerro Gordo at ‘Sundowner time’
The swimming pool comes alive again at about 5.30pm with games, and as the sun sinks behind the Cerro Gordo peninsula to the west in a glorious display of colour, the choice is either to descend again to another of La Herradura’s restaurants or dine ‘al fresco’ ‘en famille’ at El Refugio’s long table, enjoying barbecued lamb chops or skewered sardines cooked on the built-in barbecue, listening to the dusk chorus of migratory birds.
An ‘O’Rorke’ at sunset
A quick tidy up followed by a game of backgammon or cards, or completing the final chapter of the compelling book, not to mention planning for tomorrow, brings to the end a wonderful day. What a pleasant change from a pressure job or exhausting school work.
